First Robust Detection of Linear Polarization from Metric Solar Emissions: Challenging Established Paradigms by S. Dey et al.

December 9, 2025

Polarization measurements of solar radio emissions are key diagnostics of coronal plasma, magnetic fields, and propagation effects, and can provide additional constraints on the emission mechanisms. At meter wavelengths, circular polarization (CP) has long been exploited in solar radio studies, while linear polarization (LP) has been assumed to be absent. This view arose from the expectations that strong coronal Faraday rotation would completely depolarize LP within typical observational bandwidths and […]

Decimetric emission 500 arcseconds away from a flaring site: Possible scenarios from GMRT solar radio observations by Bisoi et al.*

September 4, 2018

The displaced positions of radio sources away from the true source locations are usually observed in radio images at metric and decimetric wavelengths (Duncan 1979, Benz et al. 2002, Kundu et al., 2006, Kontar et al., 2017, Mann et al., 2018). The displaced radio source location is the apparent source position, that result from the scattering of radio waves (Kontar et al. 2017) or by coronal propagation effects (Mann et […]

High resolution observations of radio noise storms in the solar corona by Prasad Subramanian and Claude Mercier

September 6, 2016

The solar corona is a well known site for particle acceleration – examples range from spectacular large flares to the hard-to-observe nanoflares that are now a leading candidate for coronal heating. We focus here on radio noise storms, which are very commonplace instances of small electron acceleration episodes. Noise storm sources are relatively small (less than 1 arcmin) and vary over timescales shorter than a second. There can often be […]

High dynamic range solar radio images by combining visibilities from the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and the Nancay Radioheliographby Claude Mercier

December 7, 2006

We present first results from an ongoing program of combining data from the Nancay Radioheliograph NRH and the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope GMRT, to produce snapshot images of the Sun at meter wavelengths. The data processing includes a superposition of complex visibilities from NRH and GMRT, a Fourier Transform and a cleaning multi-scale algorithm. We show results from a simulation and an observation of a complex noise storm at 327 […]
